One morning in late 1999, 33-year-old J. Patrick Barnes awoke to blood blisters in his mouth. The two-time survivor of Hodgkin’s Disease was quickly admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a rare autoimmune disease that affects the blood’s ability to clot normally.

They created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Barnes and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease.
